CHAPTER 4
Time and Project Management
4.1 Environment
If your space is correctly set up and compact, it can reduce your unconscious resistance to dealing with your stuff and also make it attractive for you to sit down and crank through your input and your work. A perfect period for most people is two whole days, back to back. (Donât be put off by that if you do not have that long to spend, however. Doing some of the activities I suggest will be useful, however much or how little time you devote to them. Two days arenât required to benefit from such techniques and principlesâthey will begin to pay off almost immediately.) Implementing the complete workflow can take up to 6 hours or longer, and clarifying and deciding on activities for all of the input youâll want to externalize and capture in your system can easily take another 8 hours. Of course, you can even collect and process your items in balls, but itâll be a lot easier if you can handle that front-end portion in one fell swoop. The perfect time for me to work with someone in executing this methodology is on a weekend or vacation because the chance of outside disturbance is minimal then.
Youâll have to opt for a physical place to serve as your central cockpit of control. If you already have an office and a desk area set up where you work, thatâs possibly the best place to get started. If you operate from a home office, that will be your prime location. , Youâll want to set up identical, even interchangeable, systems in the working area; however, one will most likely be primary. Should you feel you donât have eitherâyou donât have some central physical spot youâd call home for dealing with your stuffâyou must create one. Even if you have a portable, high-tech lifestyle thatâs mainly virtual, you will still require a private setting for a base camp from which to operate. You will want to implement this program to do work and procedure input signal, but beginning with a primary location is best. The workspace principles are just a writing surface and room for an in tray, and likely (for many people) space for center electronics. Some, such as a foreman in a machine shop, an intake nurse on a hospital floor, or your childrenâs nanny, will not need a whole lot more than that. Many homemakers will not necessarily need a vast region to manage their workflow. Still, with enough of a discrete space dedicated to the processing of notes, e-mail, household tasks, financing, are critical.
A functional workspace is crucial. If you do not already have a dedicated workspace and in tray, get them today. Everybody must have a physical locus of control from where to deal with everything else.
Do not skimp on the workspace at home. As youâll discover utilizing this process, you must have at least a satellite home system similar to a mobile office with the essential tools necessary to achieve any urgent task.
